After spending 12 to 15 hours on my first, I realized I’d backed myself into a corner in terms of some late-game options. Of course, that also means you’re going to screw up the first time. It’s manageable though, with most of the nonfunctional items hidden until after you’ve laid down a foundation and done some research. Starting a new zoo is still intimidating, presented with acres upon acres of empty land to fill. You can research new themes to decorate your zoo, new staff facilities to accommodate your growing employee pool, new barriers to better protect your guests from your animals (and vice versa), and so on. You start with a limited construction kit and limited funds, then gradually expand both your zoo and your options. Positioned between Career and Creative, Franchise Mode is a slightly structured sandbox. Twice-or three times now, if you count the beta. You could play with a restricted toolbox in someone else’s zoo…or you could just go make your own.Īnd make your own, I did. The prefab zoos Frontier includes for each mission are inspiring, sure, but unlocking all 14 will take a lot of patience. I did dabble in the Career early on, but quickly tired of going through the motions of what felt like an extended tutorial. Basically imagine that you’re playing vanilla zoo tycoon, but it has heavily detailed graphics and micromanagement.It’s a lot of hours, most of them spent in Franchise Mode. right with dinosaurs and marine show animals in it. So if you are expecting dinosaur and marine zoo tycoon expansion packs from PZ, you will quickly see that it just won’t feel. this game is completely a different feel than zoo tycoon, but still has a nod to zoo tycoon. The game is still playable and enjoyableīUT, people that played zoo tycoon still have the zoo tycoon complete collection mentality and want the devs to add marine dlc and Dino dlc. but it’s more mildly annoying than anything. There’s a few staple zoo animals missing, like kangaroos and penguins, so they might show up at a later time in a dlc pack. So, if you are willing to spend a lot of time getting used to the controls and looking to other players’ workshop uploads and YouTube videos before you expect to build absolutely gorgeous and heavily detailed zoos, then I’d say go ahead and buy it now. So YouTube videos will be needed to fully understand how and what you need to do. I mean, you might learn a little bit of the basic management, but tutorials treat it more like you should already know how to play the game, if that makes sense. You will not learn anything important from them. So you have to stick with cheap animals with bad genetics to earn enough credits to start your zoo franchise. You start out with very little credits, and 90% of the purpose of franchise mode is to get credits. They actually just updated it that added some much needed settings (such as an always powered and always filtered zoo).įranchise mode (playing online, buying/selling animals to other players, community challenges) is hard to get into at first. Sandbox mode is great if you aren’t that into micromanagement. That being said, after hours of practicing all the build features, looking at YT videos, looking at actual zoo images, and looking at the workshop for inspiration, I started to get really into it. And FYI, placing paths will give you a headache in both games. If you have never played planet coaster, either, it’s especially challenging to get used to such detailed building features. building in the Sims with the moveobjects cheat. Building (unless you use blueprints) is like. It has lots of micromanagement and can be a challenge to get used to all the build features compared to ZT. It is, as already mentioned, a daunting game to get started with. The ultimate answer is yes, this game is worth it.
